Description

Egypt's largest opposition parties received a serious blow this week as a result of their defeat in the general elections. The second biggest opposition bloc, the liberal Wafd party, said it would refuse to take up the two seats it won in a parliamentary election it claims was rigged, in addition to refusing to take part in a second round. Additionally, Egypt's biggest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, said they were quitting the parliament race before run-offs scheduled for Dec. 5. The two parties, which lost heavily in Sunday's vote, have said the poll was discredited by vote manipulation, thuggery, and other tricks. The Egyptian newspaper, Al Ahram said the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) clinched 217 seats in the 508 seat People's Assembly, with just eight other seats being assigned elected members--five to opposition candidates and three to independents. In the run-off on 5 December, 550 parliamentary hopefuls have been scheduled to contest the remaining 283 seats. As tallied by the Higher Election Committee (HEC), they included 377 NDP, 9 Wafd, 6 Tagammu, 1 El Salam, 27 Brotherhood and 140 independents.
